Cameroon have always been regarded as one of the top African Teams

Cameroon have always been regarded as one of the top African teams around, but the team has been going through a horrible spell both on and off the field.

This appears to be slowly changing after they brought in German coach Volker Finke as the new coach of the national team after May 2013. The fact that they did not do very well at the World Cup 2014 was not surprising given that the team was not performing well as a unit. Now, though, things appear to be changing withFinke managing an impressive set of results in recent times.

After having recently managed victories in friendlies over the likes of Indonesia and Thailand, Cameroon recently secured a 3-2 win over Burkina Faso. These friendlies were seen as an ideal preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign that begins shortly. Cameroon are in the same group containing the likes of South Africa and Gambia, but their opening match will be against Mauritania. This match is seen as an ideal opportunity forFinke’s men to make a strong start to the qualification campaign. Since Cameroon and South Africa are regarded as the favourites to qualify from this group, there is a danger of complacency.

“We need to keep faith, even if we are here to learn at the highest level. We are going to give our best to seal this qualification,” said the opposition coach, Corentin Martins. Mauritania will be confident of causing an upset in the game. A good result between South Africa and Gambia in the other match will also provide a lot of confidence to the Cameroon team. Cameroon went out of the last Africa Cup of Nations after failing to achieve even a single victory. They suffered one defeat in two draws in the three group matches.
