Cameroon destroyed by instability

Cameroon were once one of the strongest teams in Africa, but several decades of instability has destroyed the national team.

Cameroon are no longer the powerhouse of Africa. Hence, they are aware that they need to work extremely hard if they are to qualify for the next World Cup. The national team recently turned their attention towards Belgium coach Hugo Broos in the hope of rediscovering form. Since being appointed as the national team was in February 2016, Cameroon were without much success under the management of the 64-year-old before finally getting their first win in the game against Mauritania.

The poor performances in the African Cup of Nations and the subsequent friendly against France mean that the honeymoon period may already be over for the 64-year-old. However, he remains unfazed by the possibility since he is working towards the goal of getting the national team to the World Cup 2018 in Russia. The national team recently achieved qualification to the 2017 African Cup of Nations which will take place in Gabon. The tactician claimed that it certainly was not easy to qualify for this competition because the group contained top teams like South Africa, Gambia, andMauritania.

South Africa’s poor form was capitalised to the fullest by Cameroon, who have qualified with a game to spare.“Since taking up the job, I’ve tried to get to know the pool of players and pick the best ones to represent their country. People are sometimes surprised by my choices, but I’ve given them a lot of thought. To get the right results, you have to first build a squad and pick players who can work well together on and off the pitch. Our international players must understand that the overall objective is a win for the team and not their own individual performances,” said Broos.
